Progress in Children’s Services

Recent research suggests that great improvements have been made in the quality of children’s services as they are, importantly, allowing children to be central in the decision making process.

The report commissioned by the Officer of the Children’s Commissioner, and carried out by the National Children’s Bureau and the Children’s Rights Alliance for England, has found that great progress has been made in children’s services, and encouraging child participation. This has been reflected in legislative change, increased resources and better service delivery.

The report set out four key goals for child participation:

•Listen to children of all ages
•Consider participation as a process not an event
•Be clear about the achievements of participation
•Weave the involvement of children into the culture of organisations and the wider society.
