Shared Parenting Bill in House of Commons
Brian Binley, Conservative MP for Northampton South, has tabled a Private Members Bill on shared parenting. This would allow Shared Parenting Orders enabling parents to be equal carers, although some exceptions would apply.
This would differ from the current system where one parent is viewed as the sole carer and one viewed as the financial provider of the family. This would bring the UK in line with many EU countries who also have shared parenting legislation. This will be beneficial as it will assist both parents remaining a central part of the child’s life after their relationship sadly ends, if the Bill is passed after debates next summer.
At Brendan Fleming Solicitors we are committed to getting the best for families, whatever the situation, and we hope this Bill can help parents and children in the difficult transition of a divorce, if this bill is passed.
